paper boats
maybe we lived through two different sunsets
you said goodbye to a pomegranate blossom, i waved off a seagull
but without you, mornings forget to brew the tea
the sun doesn’t rise, it just becomes a pale light at my window
if your smile is a memory of an angel
then im a child mailing love letters to heaven
i keep my prayer in the inside pocket of my coat
committing the sin of loving you without knowing your name
maybe i was a poem before you
but then you came, and turned the poem into yourself
i was a forgotten line in someone’s notebook
you came, and turned my silence into meaning
i don’t know who you are, but i know your absence
every kind of loneliness describes you a little
it’s like you’re sitting at the edge of my pillow
a small god of sleepless nights
maybe we’ll never meet
maybe you’re the kind of dream that never waits
but i
from a window that doesn’t face you
am still folding my soul
into small paper boats
and sending them
down a river called you
maybe you are a smile
but i am the flower that forgets to bloom each spring
if you ever pass down my street
a butterfly that looks like you will rise from within me
